Cuban President Raul Castro has instructed Vice President Marino Murillo to oversee the implementation of economic reforms after their approval at the Congress of the ruling Communist Party of Cuba (CCP ) in April. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
An official release Saturday in the official daily Granma reported that the folder of Economy and Planning will pass to the hands of Murillo's former deputy Adel Izquierdo, 65 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], former planning and economic director in the Ministry of Armed Forces.
Murillo, 49, an economist dubbed as "brain of the economic reforms, should now focus his work after the approval of the reforms at the Congress in "overseeing its implementation [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," the statement said.
As vice president, Murillo will continue overseeing all economic agencies, including the Ministry of Economy and Planning, as well as other productive sectors, the release added.
The Sixth Congress of the CCP to be held from April 16 to 19 will be the first since 1997, its fundamental topic to debate and ratify is the plan of economic reforms undertaken by Raul Castro to "update" the Cuban socialist model.
The economic reforms include cutting of a million state jobs, expansion of small private businesses and increase of foreign investment.
