There are several hundred searches done each day on how to find a
physician. People want to know the best way to choose a doctor out of
the many that practice in their area. But of course learning how to find
a physician is easy. Anyone with the phone book can do so. What these
people really want to know is how to find a physician they can trust.
How to find one that is really good. And the answer to that isn’t quite
so obvious. To be thorough, you’ll have to do some research. But if you
know where to look, you can learn everything you need to know about
checking a doctor’s background.
The easiest place to start is with the doctor’s office. Ask them and
their staff about the doctor’s credentials. They won’t lie to you
(unless you’ve really wound up in a true place of quackery), but it’s
easy to understand why many people are uncomfortable with this line of
questioning. Many people are wont to avoid confrontational situations at
all costs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and this sort of questioning can start to feel like
interrogation. It shouldn’t, though. A doctor who has extensive
credentials should be more than happy to let you know about them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], right?
If you get any hemming and hawing or shady explanations, let that be
your first sign that you would be better off finding someone else.
If you feel like your doctor was hiding something or not telling the
complete truth, go straight to the source. Contact their school and ask
them to verify what you’ve been told. This information isn’t classified.
The school should be able to tell you whether a certain person
graduated when they said they did with the degree they claim. You can
also check with other institutions such as the AMA to make sure that
when the doctor said they were associated with them they were telling
the truth.
Your next step is to contact the state medical board. Through them you
can verify the doctor’s credentials (or discover them anew,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if you were
uncomfortable with the first step). The board is there for the
protection and advocacy of patients and you shouldn’t hesitate to use
them as a resource. They will also be able to tell you if the doctor has
been at the center of any malpractice suits and whether they have ever
come under review for disciplinary action from the board. Weigh this
information carefully when it comes to making your final decision.
Learning how to find a physician is easy. Anyone with the phone book can
do so. What people really want to know is how to find a physician they
can trust. How to find one that is really good. And the answer to that
isn’t quite so obvious.
