Bolivia's parliament said on Friday it supported President Evo Morales' plan to launch a petition at the International Court of Justice [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], demanding the tiny landlocked country get a sea outlet from Chile.
"As president of the Legislative Assembly I express our absolute support to the initiative of President Morales and I want to urge people from the country and the cities to join us and support the brave initiative," Vice President Alvaro Garcia said.
Bolivia lost the Tarapaca coast territory to Chile, which cut off its direct access to the sea in the 1879-1883 War of the Pacific [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the issue has led to numerous disputes ever since.
Stressing that Bolivia will not close the door of dialogue with Chile, Garcia said "the door will always be open" for a negotiated agreement on the sensitive issue.
Bolivia and Chile started talks in 2006 based on a 13-point agenda to discuss the sea outlet.
Bolivia, however [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has been increasingly impatient by the slow progress on the talks. President Morales said on Wedensday that his government will take the petition to The Hague.
