The New Pony Express - The Internet
Giddy-up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! Take a ride on the fastest “one man” show in the Wild West The Pony Express. Fearless riders linked together to form the best east-west delivery of communication across the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. It served customers for a whopping eighteen months before being taken over by telegraph messages, delivering mail from the Atlantic to the Pacific in ten days. It was considered a FAST service in 1860, an undertaking requiring the use of 120 riders, 184 exchange stations, 400 horses and hundreds of support personnel.
The telegraph’s first messages were sent in 1858 and as soon as the lines were strung west the Pony Express folded,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unable to keep pace with the competition. Prices for delivery of a letter at the Pony Express dropped from $5 an ounce to $1 an ounce eventually forcing the company into bankruptcy.
Technology took over, changing communication in leaps and bounds. Telephones, television, transistors, CATV,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], computers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and cellular technology changed the way we communicate at ever increasing speeds, ultimately leading us to today’s e-world our internet. The characteristics of the internet are still in evolutionary stages, ones changing our lives on a daily basis, ones with both pros and cons.
The cons: Our e-world is not a private place. Employees need to be aware that there may be employment-related consequences for using the internet, like blogging about employment-related matters, sending proprietary information to outside entities, or even talking about colleagues, all possible terms for dismissal. Phishing, identity theft, and hackers are constantly prying into corporate files, our bank accounts, and personal accounts helping themselves to information and money as fast as new codes can be written to block them out.
Ah, but the pros out-weigh the cons, as opportunities abound on the internet. Network marketing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], social networking, and multi-level companies have stepped product branding up a notch. Hundreds of job search engines offer thousands of employment opportunities across the globe. News from around the globe is available instantly. Want to know something about anything most likely it’s on the internet.
As a social network the internet ties people with like interests together, expanding its reach around the globe. Social networks and the means to deliver their messages abound. Twitter,Timberland France, Facebook, MySpace, You-Tube, Blogger, WordPress, Friend Feed, Tumbler, sac burberry soldes, Live Journal, RSS feeds and more offer a means of instant communication at no cost to their users,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all at the touch of a button. Those infamous riders of the Pony Express would be amazed and rightfully so.
Today our e-world is protected by U.S. copyright laws, where users agree to abide by notices and other restrictions, as accessing, using, displaying, distributing, louboutin discount, copying or downloading content from a site for other than personal, educational, and non-commercial use is expressly prohibited without prior written consent. Content of all websites in the form of forums, message boards, and news groups are public information.
This information travels quickly, too. A 1mb (megabit) connection can upload an entire webpage in less than a second and download a popular song in about 40 seconds. A 2mb connection allows you to watch online video content, play games or share files with someone online. It gets faster, too, as six to eight mb connections scream, while 24 mb connections roar, making downloading virtually seamless in today’s world.
Tomorrow, however, the internet might have the capability to download programs we need instantly and without human intervention, programming, or changing files, freeing us from hours of work. Wireless and satellite services may take handheld units to new levels, making the internet a truly mobile venue, thus allowing people to work and shop at home. Manufacturing may become internet driven as companies use robotics to integrate the science behind the technology of the internet to cut costs. Currency may become obsolete as e-pay services make payments to vendors, sac vuitton prix, stores, merchants and people around the world seamless. Services like the postal delivery and newspapers may disappear entirely. All paper content may succumb to the competition pressure of the internet, making delivery of their content a truly “green” event.
Giddy-up!
