Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia, a long line of tissues that extends from the heel area through the bottom of the foot, becomes irritated from overuse. The plantar fascia can become scarred, damaged, or even ruptured completely when the problem becomes excessive. Plantar fasciitis causes extreme pain in the heel area when not cared for properly.
